Coinbase's x402 protocol for agent payments has settled roughly 200 million transactions since launch, but a 2026 report found 90.8% of those payments were worth under one cent. In a 35-day sample, agents made 6.4 million transactions but moved only $120,000, mostly buying information, including token safety checks and web searches. The report reviewed 19 AI products and financial workflows and found 14 acted only within human-approved limits, none could set its own goals, and five of seven trading venues blocked agent withdrawals. On Hyperliquid, AI-labeled applications handled 0.55% of $653 million traded from Jan. 1 to Aug. 25. In May 2026, Bankrbot sent $175,000 in tokens after xAI's Grok translated a Morse-code message.
