The State of AI Agent Payments 2026 report found that 14 of 19 reviewed products and workflows could act under permissions approved in advance, while examining two selected incidents that sent $281,200 to attackers before recoveries. It also noted a May 2026 case in which an AI agent mistakenly triggered a $175,000 transfer to the wrong address. Daniel Ishag, Bakkt’s chief commercial officer, described an AI booking a business-class flight to the wrong Korea to show that following a budget does not mean understanding the task. The report says AI-agent payment infrastructure is becoming usable, but broad demand and autonomous financial activity are not yet well demonstrated.
