The Securities and Exchange Commission’s Division of Corporation Finance issued a staff position that Canton Coin will circulate as a digital commodity and said it would not recommend enforcement for programmatic issuance if certain conditions are met. Digital Asset Holdings, developer of the Canton protocol, requested the relief in an Oct. 30 letter, asking whether minting Canton Coin without registration under securities law would trigger enforcement. The division cited the network’s automated operation, supply-and-demand dynamics and decentralized structure rather than profit expectations tied to third-party management. Digital Asset also pointed to Canton’s burn-and-mint model, under which transaction-fee coins are burned and new coins reward network participants, and said the token had no pre-mine, initial coin offering or pre-launch sale.
