OpenAI announced Tuesday a research partnership with Mazda that pairs OpenAI’s research and Forward Deployed Engineering teams with Mazda’s aerodynamics and crash-safety teams to explore using OpenAI models in vehicle design and evaluation. In aerodynamics, the GPT-6 Astra model is being used to model new nose shapes, simulate airflow and refine the most promising designs with the goal of reducing drag, while accounting for styling and cost. Akihiro Nakata, a principal engineer at Mazda, said simulating dozens of variations helps identify which features matter for aerodynamics and where designers have room to explore. OpenAI said it will share progress and results over the coming months.
