The United States struck Iran’s Qeshm Island on Monday, US officials said, and Iranian state media reported explosions there. The island is near the Strait of Hormuz, and officials said the strike answered the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps firing on a US aircraft. It came the day before US midterm elections in a war that began February 28; US officials described recent limited strikes as defensive and aimed at protecting US assets and curbing attacks on commercial shipping. The IRGC said it captured two US drones south of Qeshm.
