Hackers took more than $8 billion from Binance, Bybit and Bitget over 20 months by tricking approval systems instead of stealing private keys, the master passwords for wallets. Binance lost about $6.3 billion on October 29 after an engineer's laptop was compromised; Bybit lost nearly $1.5 billion in February 2025 through tampered Safe{Wallet} software, which the FBI linked to North Korea; Bitget lost $387.5 million in September through flaws in outside security products. Coinbase, which holds Bitcoin behind most US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds and has disclosed no comparable theft, says it splits keys across machines using multi-party computation and builds security-critical software in-house. Criminals bribed staff to leak customer data in 2025, though Coinbase said funds were never accessible.
