EU furthers probe into TikTok over harmful algorithm

The European Commission has accused TikTok of violating the EU’s online-content rules through a recommendation system that leads users into cycles of similar videos, which regulators say can harm children and vulnerable people. The preliminary findings put TikTok at risk of fines of up to 6% of parent company ByteDance’s global annual turnover. This is the first time the Commission has found a platform’s recommendation system itself in breach of the Digital Services Act, which requires large online platforms to address harmful and illegal content. The case focuses on TikTok’s For You feed and follows four earlier accusations against the company, though no fine has been imposed.
