Ben Edgington, who coordinates Ethereum’s fast-finality work, opened a pull request on October 21 for a Decoupled Consensus design co-written with Francesco D’Amato, Roberto Saltini, Yann Vonlanthen and Mikhail Kalinin. The unmerged draft aims to separate head votes, cast by committees of about 512 validators per slot, from finality attestations by the full validator set. It targets at least a fourfold cut in time to finality, from roughly 16 minutes today to about four minutes, though the draft gives no figure; a reviewer proposed proposal number 8453. Finality is the point when validators will not reverse blocks, and it now takes two voting rounds, each an epoch of 32 twelve-second slots.
