Trenton Richard David Johnston, a 20-year-old Canadian, was sentenced on October 26 by a Miami federal judge to 25 months in prison for his role in a $13 million cryptocurrency theft. Johnston had pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering; prosecutors had sought 51 to 63 months, and a separate wire fraud conspiracy charge was dropped. Authorities recovered about $3.8 million of the stolen funds. Homeland Security Investigations said Johnston and co-conspirators impersonated cryptocurrency-company support workers and Google representatives, including in a March 13 theft of about 185 bitcoin from a California victim. He was arrested in March and will receive credit for seven months in custody.
