Binance, described as the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by users and trading volume, said on October 30, 2026 that it had been hacked, with an estimated total impact of about $6.3 billion. Its initial investigation suggested a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop may have allowed unauthorized withdrawal transactions through a service container, though Binance found no evidence of a wallet private-key leak. Binance said it would cover all losses from its SAFU fund and company funds, reported about $3 billion frozen on-chain with partners, and temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while revoking the affected address authorization and engaging law enforcement. Bitcoin fell from above $81,000 to around $76,400 as the news unfolded, with about $1.5 billion in derivatives liquidations.
