Binance confirmed that a security incident on October 29 affected nearly $6.3 billion, after its initial investigation pointed to a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop that let an attacker reach a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. Binance said it found no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked, and it paused deposits and withdrawals while revoking authorization for the affected address. Industry participants froze about $3 billion onchain, including $1.567 billion in USDT by Tether and more than $800 million in USDC by Circle, leaving roughly $3.3 billion out of reach. Binance said its SAFU emergency fund and company reserves would cover every dollar of user losses.
