At about 21:16 UTC on Oct. 29, 2026, Binance founder CZ, also referred to as Zhao, said on X that a suspected hack of Binance appeared to have occurred while user funds remained safe. Tether and Circle froze about $971 million and $823 million respectively, roughly $1.79 billion, or about two-thirds of $2.77 billion in reported outflows across five blockchains. Zhao, who said he no longer manages Binance.com but is a shareholder, said he expected all user funds to be fully covered, an expectation rather than an exchange commitment. Binance had not issued an update by about 21:20 UTC; roughly 195,000 ETH and 16,700 BTC were outside the stablecoin freezes.
