Binance confirmed that a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop allowed unauthorized withdrawals estimated at about $6.3 billion on Thursday. The attacker accessed an internal service container used to submit withdrawals rather than wallet private keys, and Binance suspended deposits and withdrawals while revoking the affected address’s authorization. About $3 billion was frozen with partners including Tether and Circle, while TRM Labs and Chainalysis tied the attack to North Korea’s TraderTraitor group. Binance said losses would be covered by its SAFU fund and company funds. If estimates hold, the theft is more than four times the prior record, Bybit’s February 2025 loss of about $1.5 billion.
