On Wednesday, Dario Amodei thanked Nathan Calvin, Encode's general counsel, for scrutinizing the company after Calvin helped drive a backlash against a leaked AI safety bill. Anthropic, weeks from a planned IPO, promised to rewrite parts of the draft, tentatively called the AEGIS Act. Critics said it lacked licensing and standards for third-party evaluators and made dangerous models harder to block; the Commerce Department could ask a federal court to pause a model only for a clear near-term risk of more than 50 deaths or serious injuries, or more than $1 billion in damages, from a bioweapon, model escape or cyberattack. Anthony Cimino, who leads Anthropic's federal affairs team, said wording that cancels state rules was imprecise and promised changes.
