a16z crypto rebrands as a16z Frontier, 5 months after crypto-only pledge

Andreessen Horowitz’s crypto arm has told its limited partners that it will rename itself a16z Frontier and broaden its investing beyond crypto. The change comes five months after the firm described its $2.2 billion fifth fund as entirely dedicated to crypto entrepreneurs. The unit, a major crypto venture investor, has raised nearly $10 billion across five funds since its first $350 million vehicle in 2018, and its $4.5 billion fourth fund remains the largest single crypto fund recorded. It had already backed non-blockchain companies including prediction market Kalshi and AI compute marketplace Ornn, while crypto venture funding fell to about $5 billion in the first quarter of 2026 from roughly $6 billion a year earlier.
